Software's Fourth Generation Language have a unique
feature called "multilingual r-code." This
technology allows you to create a single set of
runtime code (r-code) which can support multiple
natural languages. Such an application can be
deployed in France and Germany and Japan, for
instance, with a single source code. The advantages
of single source for all languages are many, but the
most obvious is the ease of maintaining the code.
Progress supports
multilingual r-code with a product called
"Translation Manager." Version 7 and
earlier versions use "Tranman" and Version
8 uses "Tranman II." Both products create a
multilingual database, which is used by the compiler
to create multilingual r-code.

Translating the user interface is a major part of localizing products for foreign markets, but it is not the whole story. Just as with other technologies, such as C/C++, the entire program needs to be adapted to the target locale. Dialog boxes need to be resized, tab folders need to be adjusted, bitmaps need to be modified for other cultures, dates and currency symbols need to be adapted.
